Fade Friday - Samurai Fire Element (2 Years, Many Washes)

Fade Friday – Samurai Fire Element (2 Years, Many Washes)

Today’s Fade Friday comes by way of SuperFuture member Gilangaditya. The Indonesian denim-head has consistently produced pair after pair of inspirational denim, and has effortlessly earned his spot in our weekly feature.

After 2 years of consistent wear, Gilangaditya’s pair of Samurai Jeans’ Fire Element jeans are a work to behold. The grainy atari and vertical fading stand testament to the possibilities of Japanese denim and serve as a reminder that hard-worn and well-washed denim can produce amazing results.

The Fire Element jeans are part of Samurai’s Go-Rin-No-Sho collection, released in 2010, which included a pair of jeans for each element of the “Book of Five Rings”, written by legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi.

Samurai also released jeans for the remainder of the the books: Earth, Water, Wind, and the mysterious-sounding Void.

Samurai Jeans – S5000AI 24 oz. Natural Indigo Raw Denim

If you were asked to imagine the ultimate pair of jeans, would any of the following criteria apply?

  • Raw denim
  • Selvedge
  • Heavy weight
  • Chain stitched
  • Natural Indigo
  • Fades well

If you answered any or all of the above, good news! While at this point they’re not quite a fresh release, Japanese denim giant Samurai Jeans Co. offers a pair of jeans that fit all of the above characteristics.

With the S5000AI 24 oz. model, Samurai has combined all of the elements that make their jeans so popular into one awesome pair of denim. Starting with their signature S5000 straight fit, the Osaka-based company has created an extra-heavy 24 oz. denim using cotton that has been hand-dyed in all-natural indigo.

Natural indigo is known for it’s brighter shade of blue and many denim heads consider it to produce better fades than synthetic dyes. The AI in the model name comes from aizome, the Japanese name for the natural indigo hand-dyeing process.

This natural dye, coupled with Samurai’s beloved heavyweight denim and their eye for quality makes for a winning combination that, in our opinion, is worth the steeper price tag.

The Samurai Jeans Co. Guide To Washing Raw Jeans

Rawr Denim exists for one purpose: To gather the best information about raw denim all in one easy to use place. Stated simply, we aim to keep you from having to spend hours combing through forums’ less-than-amazing search results and spare you the the wrath of their users for the information you need about raw denim.

Today, we hope to save you from the agonizing pain of deciphering awful Google Translate results to get information off of Japanese sites. The following is Rawr Denim’s translation of the washing guide on Samurai Jeans Co.’s official site.

(Note: In Japanese, the terms for “soak” and “wash”, as we designate them in English, are interchangeable. Anything in parentheses is a note from the translator.)

Samurai Jeans Co. – Washing Advice

 Regarding The First Wash -

The first wash (or “initial soaking” in English) is primarily done to “de-starch” the jeans, and is also used to control shrinkage.

When you first purchase your jeans they will be very stiff due to the starch added during the manufacturing process. Initially, it is not recommended that you wear your jeans until you wash them with water to make them more comfortable. It will also decrease the extent of any irregularities in the denim.

Also, as the denim is initially “rigid” (The English term is used), please note that unique twisting may occur during the first soak. (We call this leg-twist in English)

Steps -

  1. First off, turn the jeans inside out. Place the jeans in warm water.
  2. Air will be contained within the denim; this cannot be helped. Hold down the jeans for approximately 10 minutes to soak the cotton thoroughly and release the air trapped within. Afterwards, you should be able to leave them be. If the jeans continue to rise to the surface after 10 minutes, do not worry. Soaking the jeans for 1-2 hours is adequate. At most, 24 hours is the longest they should be soaked for.
  3. Indigo dye will be released from the denim and will change the colour of the water. Machine washes will emphasize this colour-loss. Of course, hand-washing is OK as well.
At the time of the first wash detergent is not necessary, however, if one decides to use detergent please ensure it is free of fluorescent (???) additives or bleach. Our Kaminari (Thunder) Soap contains no additives and is perfect for washing jeans. *** For very heavy-ounce denim, it will remain extremely stiff. To soften, we recommend turning the jeans inside out and using a washing machine.
  4. Rinse the jeans thoroughly.
  5. Providing a washing machine was used, it is best to use the spin-cycle while the jeans remain inside-out.
  6. When the spin-cycle is finished, turn the jeans right-side-out, smooth out any wrinkles and hang-dry in the shade.
  7. Samurai Jeans Co. does not recommend using a dryer machine, but if one so chooses, please be aware of the heat and the length of time used to dry. The jeans may shrink beyond normal or the denim may soften too much, so please be careful if you choose to use the dryer.

Please use the above method as a guideline, and not as a rule. Steps will vary for those who choose a fully-automated wash, and some people prefer to leave their jeans unwashed. We believe that everyone washes in their own way. It is best to try different methods to discover one’s own personal style of washing their jeans.

Please wear your favourite Samurai jeans with love forever.

Fade Friday – Samurai Jeans Co. S710XX (5 Months, 3 Washes)

Some say that a samurai’s most valuable possession is his sword. For Samurai Jeans Co., this sword just happens to come in the form of their S710XX jeans. Hailing from the mecca of awesome raw denim that is Japan, the S710XX (commonly known as 710′s) is an exceptional pair of jeans. Not only are they constructed with a unique method but they also come in a fantastic  fit.

Worn and contributed by superdenim member werd, these jeans have only been put to work for 5 months but have nonetheless seen their fair share of action. The fade on these jeans is coming along ridiculously well for such a short period of time.

The whiskering is nearly perfect, the honeycombs are deep and defined, and the knee and seat areas show some great atari. It leaves one to wonder, just how hard do you really wear your jeans? Seriously, though, this guy’s got a crotch blowout on his jeans in only 5 months!

As for the jeans themselves, the Samurai S710XX  jeans are constructed from 19oz. raw selvedge denim that is woven with an irregular 5th thread approach. The white core yarn is dyed with a pure indigo color to help it really pop and give them an interesting texture.

Levi’s influenced arcs & pocket tab (on the Japanese models), and leather patch along with the selvedge ID make these jeans pretty memorable. After taking a look at the way that these jeans broke in, it comes as no surprise that they would happen to be Samurai’s most popular model (outside Japan, that is).

DC4 - The Purveyor Of Japanese Denim In Berlin

DC4 is a premium denim shop in Berlin, Germany that has been offering the best of Japanese brands since 2004. Daniel Cizmek, the man behind the store, embarked on this project due to his self-proclaimed “denim addiction”. He initially kicked off retailing brands including Somet and Pure Blue Japan, before finally managing to stock Iron Heart.

As time passed, he gained more experience and knowledge about Japanese fabrics, and with the help of his crew, Ollie Paff and Frank Heitmann, Cizmek put together years of experience to create the best possible store.

They eventually became an official retailer for brands like The Flat HeadDry Bones and Samurai Jeans; as well a gamut of other beloved labels, including Studio D’artisan, Souvenir Jackets, R.J.B., Manifold, Joe McCoy and soon Toy McCoy.

DC4's denim lineup

DC4 Shop

Cizmek was introduced to denim at a young age from his own father. He vividly recalls being told “real men wear denim” by his Croatian dad when he was just 5 years old. Over time his interest naturally evolved into a passion, and after a brief stint in fashion design school, he decided that denim was his business.

Samurai Denim Collection

Though his experience and passion can be seen and felt within the shop (and its success), one critical ingredient to the success thus far of DC4 has been his special care for his customers beyond a closed sale. Cizmek gives each customer the capability to customize their leather patches with material (calf or deer), edge finishing, graphic design, and other personalized options (e.g. include monogram of their own name).

DC4 Shop

A soaking room is already on the go as well, giving clients with little to no knowledge about the shrinkage process better access to unsanforized denim. Of course DC4 also offers a free chainstiching and repair service for all the jeans purchased at the store, using their own vintage “Black Head” Union Special 43200 specially tweaked for their mechanical expert, Frank. To top it all, an embroidery service is also offered.

Custom Repair Workbench Custom Leather Patches

The Berlin shop also makes an effort to maintain special relationships with their brands, including The Flat Head. At the time we were there, a crew from the Japanese label were visiting the store, exhibiting their new products in the Bread & Butter event together with DC4.

Cizmek does have a second love after denim, namely motorcycles. At the moment, he’s eagerly awaiting a specially built bike from Herzbube Motorcycles next summer called the “Twiggy”. He’s so excited for the completion date that he intends to display his custom steed at the Race 61 Festival in Finowfurt.

The denim and rockabilly worlds will also be tied in as the rockabilly band, The Rob Ryan Roadshow, are slated to perform; co-sponsored by both DC4 and the The Flat Head.

Needless to say, if you are ever in Berlin and on the lookout for Japanese premium denim or simply high calibre goods, DC4 is your place to go. Period.

Fade Friday – Samurai S5000S 21 Oz. (5 Months, 1 Soak, 1 Wash)

Samurai Jeans is a brand steeped in rich Japanese history. As the name of the brand suggests, the founder Toru Noogami‘s mission is to have the “spirit of the Japanese sword embedded in the jeans.” Holding true to Noogami’s mission, Samurai, like many other denim brands, refuses to follow pop culture.

Instead, they choose to stay true to their heritage by following decades of Japanese tradition such as the use of vintage shuttle looms and employing historical work ethics, as well as building products with durability, not trend, in mind. This week’s Fade Friday showcases a pair of 4 month old Samurai S5000S jeans that we believe Noogami would be immensely proud of.

One of the most compelling aspects of this pair of jeans is the ease at which we can determine the wearer’s lifestyle. From the heavy fading on the knees, we can conclude that the wearer, reader Andrew Richardson, works some form of labour. The impressively well-defined (in a relatively short scope of time) whiskers and coin pocket imprinting tell us that the jeans also spend a fair amount of time in a seated position.

Richardson reinforces both of these assumptions in the short bio that he provided – “I work construction, work on cars in them and go to school in them during the week” he says, “on the weekend they are my go to pair. I am trying to test the denim, doing whatever I can to beat them up”.

The denim used in the construction of this Samurai S5000S is a 100% cotton 21 oz. Japanese selvedge denim. As is standard with Samurai Jeans, the denim is dyed using Pure Indigo dyes.

Samurai Jeans S710XX – Review

Samurai S710 Honeycomb Fading

There’s often quite a disconnect between the tastes of Japanese denim fans and enthusiasts living in other parts of the world. While Japanese denim fans wash their jeans often and prefer looser fits, denim heads in other parts of Asia, North America, and Europe often lean toward producing sharp contrast fades through infrequent washing and much slimmer initial fits.

This disconnect is particularly evident with S710xx jeans. While this pair is virtually ignored in Japan because of the slim fit, it’s by far the most popular pair of Samurai Jeans outside of Japan. This popularity comes for good reason: the S710xx is quite simply one of the best pairs of jeans on the market today.

Samurai S710 Front and Back Views

Details

  • Name: Samurai S710xx
  • Weight: 19 oz.
  • Fit: Slim straight
  • Denim: Unsanforized Samurai Kiwami denim
  • Further details:
    • Bulging belt loops
    • Jacquard pocket bags
    • Goatskin leather patch
    • Original buttons
    • Hidden copper rivets
    • Navy arcs, red tab
    • All-cotton construction

Denim

The denim is one of the S710xx’s main draws, though at first I wasn’t very impressed with the denim on my pair. The initial colour was greyish and much lighter than a pair of Flat Head‘s I’d already worn for several months. However, my opinion quickly changed as I wore the jeans daily through fall and winter, shovelling snow in the northern mountains of Japan.

The Kiwami denim fades fast – incredibly fast – maybe the fastest of any jeans I’ve ever worn. Four months in, the colour has changed dramatically from a dull, almost grey colour, to a vibrant shade of blue.

Samurai S710 Pockets

The texture is certainly an important part of the draw of the denim as well, the 19 oz. denim is unsanforized and as a result feels extremely rough. The denim has a textured feel that hasn’t gone away after months of wearing (though the jeans do feel softer and more comfortable than before.)

This is unsanforized denim at its best – it has a very unique, irregular texture to its fades that is still quite different to the vertical fading of brands such as Flat Head and Eternal. The denim is very warm, which makes these jeans an ideal choice for cold weather.

Unlike heavier, sanforized denim that brands like Iron Heart uses, the unsanforized denim doesn’t breathe very well and isn’t the best choice for wearing in hot weather. The creases are very well-defined, and the rough surface of the denim lends itself to high-contrast fading.

My only real complaint about the denim is my wish that it was dyed darker. If it started out as dark as Flat Head or Eternal denim, it would be just about perfect.

Fit

Even if it weren’t for the denim, the S710xx would probably still be popular around the world for its fit, as the slim-straight cut is well-adapted to suit many different body types. At 6’3”/191cm, I am much taller than the average guy. I’m slim, but I’ve often had problems with tapered cuts because of my proportions. Tall people have longer thighs, and often this results in our thighs digging into the ‘knee’ of the jeans where tapering begins. This can result in an awkward fit where the middle of the leg is too tight in comparison with the rest of the cut.

Samurai S710 Leather Tag

The S710xx is one of the only pairs I’ve encountered where this wasn’t a problem.  The top thigh is slim, but not tight, and the leg gradually tapers down to the knee finishing off at a slim opening of about 7.75”. Additionally, these jeans have a good rise, avoiding the underwear bearing problems of the low rises of many slim fitting jeans. The S710xx has a longer rise that’s much more comfortable to wear.

The S710xx has a pretty flexible fit; allowing many people to size down for more of a slim tapered look. I went true-to-size at a 31, but it would have been possible to go down a size if my body was willing to endure the additional pain at first.

Hardware

The S710xx has, unsurprisingly, a number of attractive details. As someone who is very particular about front pockets, I have to compliment Samurai for a job well done. The pocket openings are wide and deep enough to accommodate my entire hand. Additionally, the pocket bags are made of a jacquard fabric with “Samurai Jeans” woven into the pattern; I have no idea how they managed to do this but it’s quite impressive. The pockets don’t seem like they’d be as durable as a heavy canvas or twill material, but they look very nice.

Samurai S710 Selvedge Line

The belt loops have a bulging shape that will lead to contrast fading, an important detail for me after I first noticed it on my Flat Head jeans. Now jeans with conventional flat belt loops look somewhat two-dimensional to me. The button holes, rather regretfully, are the conventional type (cut, then sew) as opposed to the ato-mesu technique in which the shape is sewn before the hole is cut in the middle. As a side note, the button holes were insanely tight at first; making buttoning these jeans literally painful until the holes worn in over time.

The hardware is fantastic and shows Samurais traditional attention to detail. The rising sun fly buttons look and feel great, and the copper rivets are a nice touch as well. What’s really nice are the hidden rivets, branded with 諸行無常, a Japanese phrase meaning that all material things are impermanent.

Construction

The S710xx is immaculately crafted. I could find no problems at all with the sewing or other areas of my jeans. Looking inside, the stitching is extremely neat and well-done, so I had no complaints and since the initial look I haven’t had any problems with inseam or pocket threads coming undone; a nice change from other high-end Japanese jeans I’ve worn.

The hem is, of course, chain-stitched, as are a number of other parts of the jeans. The construction is virtually perfect, the only thing I might’ve changed would have been to use poly/cotton core-spun thread for stitching. The rationale here is that because these are heavyweight jeans, a more durable sort of thread would have been nice.

Samurai S710 Fade Pattern

Conclusion

It’s hard to imagine a better pair of unsanforized Japanese jeans than the Samurai S710xx. From the denim to the fit, this is an all-round excellent pair of jeans. Although I am a bit of a perfectionist, it’s very hard for me to imagine finding a better pair than this.

Honestly, a darker-dyed starting denim is the only thing I’d really want to change; as well as the rather painful ordeal of getting them on and buttoning the jeans for the first time. These minor gripes aside, it would be hard to think of a better pair than these.

Exploring 5 Pairs Of Lighter-Colored Raw Denim Jeans

MainFall is nearly here, and Winter isn’t far, but just because your days will be darker doesn’t mean your denim has to be. Following on the heels of the reemerging trend of dad jeans, we decided it only made sense to look to five pairs of lighter-colored options for those who wish to stay raw while sporting a lighter hue.

It turns out that there are plenty of options for those looking to lighten their look, and while this is by no means an exhaustive list, we chose to turn our focus to the following five pairs.

1. Naked & Famous – Vintagecast Broken-Twill

NF Vintage

We’ve come to expect innovation from the Canadian brand, and this pair of denim is no exception. In this case, they’re innovating by looking backwards, as this denim’s hue hearkens back to bygone days, with a much lighter, almost electric blue. This offering is the third generation of the broken-twill series, the original being the greencast followed up by the royalcast.

The jeans are marketed as a raw option to the traditional indigo. Not only is the color distinct, but the broken-twill denim also offers a relatively unique option from the right-hand and left-hand twills featured by many brands. It’s available in WeirdGuy and SkinnyGuy fits.

Details

  • Name: Naked & Famous Vintagecast Blue Selvedge
  • Weight: 12.5 Oz.
  • Denim: Japanese vintagecast broken-twill in indigo
  • Fit: WeirdGuy and SkinnyGuy
  • Available at: Blue Owl for $155.00 YSD

2. Big John – M1 Straight Leg Ruri

Big John M1 Straight Leg Ruri

BIG JOHN is one of the original Japanese denim companies leading the charge in the repro movement; paying close attention to vintage details and offering products that display a respect for what has come before.

The M1 Straight Leg Ruri is a “cowboy jean”, with a high waist and slight taper in the leg. The denim itself has been dyed only 3/4 of the normal amount, accounting for the lighter color seen in denim of the past which BIG JOHN refers to as, “ruri.”   The jeans also feature fully printed pocket bags and a gold selvedge line.

Details

  • Name: BIG JOHN M1 Straight Leg Ruri
  • Weight: 14.5 Oz.
  • Denim: Japanese raw red-eyed gold selvedge
  • Fit: Straight with a slightly tapered leg
  • Available at: Tate + Yoko for $185.00 USD

3. Oni Denim – Low Tension 20oz Secret Denim Tapered Leg

Oni Denim - Low Tension 20oz Secret Denim Tapered Leg

Oni is as big of an enigma as far as companies go, as there isn’t too much out there about the company itself. In fact, their owner, Mr. Oishi, forgoes dealing with the press in order to focus as much time and energy on their denim. This particular pair, the Low-Tension 20 Oz. Secret Denim, as the name suggests, is made with techniques which are kept under wraps.

What we do know though is that the weft yarns are dyed beige for “a color reminiscent of cotton growing in the wild”. While not as light as the previous two pairs above, the denim does have a deep blue which is lighter than traditional indigo. However it was made, it’s most certainly intriguing.

Details

  • Name: Oni Low-Tension 20 Oz. Secret Denim Tapered Leg
  • Weight: 20 Oz.
  • Denim: Oni Japanese rope-dyed selvedge denim with beige weft
  • Fit: Mid/high rise with a tapered leg
  • Available at: Blue in Green for $325.00 USD

4. Samurai Jeans – 17oz S0210XJII-RR Limited Edition

Samurai Jeans - 17oz S0210XJII-RR Limited Edition

Samurai hardly needs an introduction as it has grown to become one of the most popular Japanese denim companies. They’re renowned for their attention to detail, and this pair lives up to the brand’s reputation with a whole slew of special detailing.

The “RR” in the title stands for “Revival and Reproduction”, a limited edition jean complete with a 15th-anniversary coin pouch and button. The warp is pure indigo with grey-dyed weft yarn, giving it the left-hand-twill denim a subdued cast. The light blue is offset by the contrast yellow stitching, and the denim comes complete with a selvedge line that features a single thread of silver lamé.

Details

  • Name: Samurai S0210XJII-RR
  • Weight: 17 Oz.
  • Denim: Japanese “Sword Selvage”; left-hand-twill selvedge denim with indigo warp and grey weft
  • Fit: Mid-rise with slightly tapered leg
  • Available at: Blue in Green for $345.00

5. Fullcount – 1108 Selvage Sweat Fleece Denim

Fullcount - 1108 Selvage Sweat Fleece Denim

Fullcount has been around for more than twenty years and was the first Japanese company to use Zimbabwe cotton. They’ve been offering classic cuts in raw denim since 1992 and they consistently produce unique goods. While the other denim on the list boasts more of a blue shade, we couldn’t resist including this pair for it’s intriguing materials and enigmatic coloring; a subtle white which is almost grey.

One can only wonder what the hand is like. Sweat fleece warp threads are interwoven with denim weft yarns to create the jeans, accounting for the uneven texture. Complete with a goat-leather patch, this pair offers something completely different than your traditional indigo.

Details

  • Name: Fullcount 1108 Sweat Fleece Selvage Denim
  • Weight: 13.75 Oz.
  • Denim: Japanese sweat fleece warp with denim weft selvedge
  • Fit: Straight with regular rise
  • Available at: Blue in Green for $76.25 (note only 38 and 40 are available)

Of course these are only a few options in a sea of lighter-colored denim out there. If there are any alternatives we’ve missed that you enjoy, sound off in the comments below!

It’s very common for brands to partner together with other brands or stores and the results are almost always interesting and unique. This time around Samurai Jeans has partnered together with the NYC Japanese specialty denim store, Blue in Green, to produce an exclusive jean.

The Black Hawk jean utilizes Samurai‘s unsanforized “Zero” black denim and weighs in at 17 oz. before an initial soak. For anyone who has black denim, you’ll know that it usually requires more time and harder wear to achieve the same fades as indigo jeans. However, with the Black Hawk denim, the warp is rope-dyed so the core of the yarn is undyed which will give similar fading characteristics as indigo denim.

The selvedge ID features both a red and silver lamé which in true Samurai fashion is described as representing “bleeding passion of the samurai’s soul and the gleam of the razor sharp sword which he possesses”.

As you’d expect from two well known denim names, the details doesn’t stop with just the fabric. The threads and hardware are all black and the pocket bags are made of black herringbone fabric. The leather patch is also dyed black with silver embossing. As these jeans get worn and age, the uniform look of the jean will give way to contrasted fades that are uncommon with black denim.

Fade Friday – Samurai Jeans S5000VX (6 Months, 2 Soaks, 2 Washes)

leadWith just a few day remaining in 2013, we close out this year’s final Fade Friday with a pair of nicely settled Samurai Jeans S5000VX 17 Oz. Courtesy of Soul4Street and Instagram user, Drinkx14, they were worn for approximately six months and submitted to two soaks and two washes.

Outside of length of wear and number of washes, unfortunately not much else is known about the denim. However, as seen by the sharp honeycombs, vertical falling on the thighs, train tracks, and darning just above the left knee, it’s clear they’ve definitely endured some heavy and long days of wear.

  • Denim: 100% Cotton original Samurai Japanese selvedge denim

    • Front pocket bag woven with message in beige threads; reads as “Shogyo Mujo”, or “all things change”

Samurai Jeans 25oz 15th Anniversary Denim Jacket (S552XX)

≈Samurai Jeans 25oz 15th Anniversary Denim Jacket (S552XX)

Surpassing their 15th year of operation, some may still scratch their head when hearing of Samurai Jeans. On one hand they are one of the most admired, respected brands in the raw denim space, but on the other they are near-illusive and difficult to obtain given their small handful of stockists outside of Japan.

Regardless of where you stand, it’s tough to argue that the Osaka-based company does not seize to impress with the wares they produce season after season. Case in point: their 25 Oz. 15th Anniversary Denim Jacket (S552XX). Despite being washed once, the S552XX possesses all the core qualities of a denim jacket – sturdy construction, purposeful hardware, clean fit – while still oozing an iconic look reminiscent of the Levi’s Type II Jacket.

Of course we would be remiss not to dig into the fine details of the piece. The jacket is finished with the traditional Samurai silver-gold selvedge, which is meant to represent a traditional samurai sword; and the garment itself utilizes the same Zero Selvedge denim fabric that we saw in the S5000VX 17 Oz. and related commemorative pieces.

Samurai Jeans Spotlight – What You Need To Know

Samurai Jeans

For a brand with such a low profile, Samurai Jeans has unexpectedly become one of the most revered companies in the world of raw denim. For over fifteen years, the company has been working to merge quality and rarity into their unique products, based on the unifying idea that, “without a perfect match between the jeans and the maker, the jeans are worthless.”

On the Samurai Jeans‘ website, their concept is explained in more detail:

…in a world dominated by cheap jeans which easily lose color, we focus on ‘quality’ and ‘the beauty and zen of the fading of color’ and seek perfection in our creations, always taking on new challenges.

Samurai Jeans was started in Osaka, Japan by Toru Nogami (Nogami-san) in 1997, at the height of Japan’s raw denim boom.  Samurai was a relative latecomer to the market, with the infamous “Osaka Five” all producing jeans early in the decade. Inspired by the Levi’s 501, Nogami-san named their first jeans the 510 (full name S510XX).

Initially, the company used medium weight fabrics, such as the 15 oz. denim, for their first jeans which only a hundred pairs were produced. But over time, Samurai began to push the limits of what a vintage-inspired company could do, as they introduced heavy fabrics and inventive experimentation, carefully working to develop original fabrics with texture and aging properties that were quite different from vintage jeans.

With their innovative effort to try new things, Samurai established a unique identity for themselves, combining American Casual influences with a distinctly Japanese edge.

Toru Nogami (Nogami-san)

Unlike some brands that have, at least in some sense, sold out for the sake of reaching a wider audience, Samurai has only become more and more obsessive over the years; perhaps culminating in 2013 when the Nogami-san and the Samurai staff produced a run of jeans in which they took part in every stage of production. Starting with the growth of the cotton itself, their actions were completely unprecedented in the history of denim, and a powerful reminder of Samurai‘s near-psychotic commitment to the art of crafting denim.

Even though the company started up in 1997, it would be years before the brand was available in the west. Only a few die-hard, early raw denim fans in the first years of the 21st century knew about Samurai, which they imported from Japan through proxying. But in 2005, the brand finally reached the US market when Gordon Heffner opened the New York-based retailer Blue in Green.

BiG remains as the only official U.S. retailer, although for a very short period in 2006, Self Edge also sold Samurai. Unlike other brands eager to expand outside of Japan, Samurai is slow to seek new retailers, and almost seem wary of their success overseas. A few other foreign retailers include DC4 representing the European market in Germany, Take5 in Asia, and Right Hand Distribution in Australia.

Blue in Green

Blue in Green

Expanding beyond their standard 15 oz straight cut, the brand now offers many models. Though initially inspired by vintage work wear and American brands such as Lee and Levi’s, the company has found considerable success in the overseas market with models such as the S710xx.

Though it attracts little interest in Japan, the 710 is by far the most popular model outside of Japan, showing the considerably divergence in taste between Japanese and Western denim fans. Iron Heart is probably the brand most closely associated with heavyweight denim, but Samurai is nearly as well-known for their heavy fabrics, including ones that go up to 24 Oz., and which are unsanforized; further adding to the extreme nature of the denim.

Samurai‘s denim has also won many fans for its terrific fading properties. Not only do fabrics like the 19 oz. denim fade much more quickly and with higher contrast than most brands’ fabrics, they also have a unique texture that’s immediately identifiable as a Samurai fabric.  Another impressive facet of their denim’s character is the nature in which all the parts of a pair of jeans are designed to age together.

In their own words,

The leather patches, buttons, rivets, slake, flasher, are used to accent and create the perfect performance, to create the epitome of original denim and the best jeans.

Samurai is heralded for their attention to detail. They always create new rivets and engravings on their denim, and a different leather patch for every single model. Most of their models include a unique leather patch with its signature full moon silhouette and lot number, which designates the year that a pair was manufactured. For example, pairs made in 2013 – celebrating the company’s 15th anniversary – are lot #16.

The brand’s first model was the classic straight cut, the S510XX. This jean has been altered and tweaked over the years, but remains the brand’s trademark model. In 2000, they came out with a WWII cut, which would later become the S3000VXThey introduced their now-infamous 19 oz Kiwami denim in 2003, along with the women’s Geisha model.

One of the brand’s most iconic models, the S0500xx, was introduced in 2006, and quickly gained attention for the SuperFuture Samurai contest. In 2007, they began to create even heavier denim, as Samurai released their first 21 oz denim, which was eventually amped up to an even-heavier 24 oz in 2009.

Samurai S5000S 21 Oz. after 5 Months, 1 Soak, 1 Wash

The people at Samurai care a lot about their denim, but they also care even more about the people wearing their jeans. They’re recognized for putting on the first worldwide denim contest back in 2006. It was put on in conjunction with Beatle and they used the S0500XX for competition.

Samurai also put on two other competitions that took place solely in Japan.  Besides competitions, however, the brand also donates pairs of jeans to the Japan Rescue Association. The jeans that are donated come from their package of re-released styles that they bring back every year. The Japan Rescue Association brings aid and performs rescue missions for people affected by earthquakes, and these jeans can be recognized with a “RR” in their name.

While Samurai could be content to coast by on the success of their standard models, the company is constantly introducing new pairs, limited editions, and otherwise taking risks at a rate that outpaces virtually any other Japanese raw denim company. Just as the company’s hidden rivets are branded with the Japanese phrase 諸行無常 - shogyo mujou, which refers to the impermanent essence of material things – they are constantly changing and innovating in interesting and unique ways.

Samurai Jeans continue on towards the future this this in mind: “To create the world’s best denim, never compromising, we keep fighting.”  The modern raw denim market might be filled with copycats, but once small brand is a powerful reminder that it’s possible to create jeans that are both recognizably based on familiar, vintage styles and yet have a distinct character and story that are completely unique to the brand.

Samurai Jeans Indigo Dyed Kunai Wabash Pinstripe Shirt and Hunting Cap

While the average denim head’s focus naturally lies within denim jeans, their interest isn’t limited to this one single garment. Many take a keen interest in other categories, particularly those which are complementary (such as leather boots or wallets) and/or share a common attribute with raw denim. Thus, it should come as no surprise that we frequently dive into and explore other facets of menswear – such as indigo and different uses of the fascinating dye.

From posters and handkerchiefs to shirting and boots, we’ve previously seen indigo beautifully utilized in all sorts of mediums. To continue our ongoing discovery of the staple dye, we look to the freshly released Kunai Wabash Pinstripe Shirt and Hunting Cap from Samurai Jeans. Both sport the deep indigo and white pinstripe color way, and are created with the quality and precision one would expect from the Japanese denim bellwether.

Whether it’s to celebrate an anniversary or just because they want to, it seems like they are consistently releasing jeans that feature a long list of intricate details. Their latest model, the Samurai S634VX-15TH Musashi Model Zero, is no exception.

It can be challenging to get all their limited edition jeans straight, but the Musashi Model Zero is quite unique in that it is one of the few Samurai jeans to feature suspender buttons and a cinch back. The denim is their signature 17 oz. Zero denim, which is an unsanforized denim known for its slubbiness and red selvedge ID with silver lamé,  and comes in their fuller S634 cut.

Other details include a crotch rivet, Jacquard pocket bags that read “Shogyo Mujo” which roughly translates to “All Things Change”, as well as extras like the 15th anniversary coin pouch and button. This jean definitely gears more towards the denimheads who favor the repro style, but regardless of whether or not this is a jean you’d wear, it’s definitely one that stands out amongst Samurai‘s vast collection.
