Fade Friday – Samurai Jeans S5000VX (6 Months, 2 Soaks, 2 Washes)

leadWith just a few day remaining in 2013, we close out this year’s final Fade Friday with a pair of nicely settled Samurai Jeans S5000VX 17 Oz. Courtesy of Soul4Street and Instagram user, Drinkx14, they were worn for approximately six months and submitted to two soaks and two washes.

Outside of length of wear and number of washes, unfortunately not much else is known about the denim. However, as seen by the sharp honeycombs, vertical falling on the thighs, train tracks, and darning just above the left knee, it’s clear they’ve definitely endured some heavy and long days of wear.

Samurai Jeans 25oz 15th Anniversary Denim Jacket (S552XX)

≈Samurai Jeans 25oz 15th Anniversary Denim Jacket (S552XX)

Surpassing their 15th year of operation, some may still scratch their head when hearing of Samurai Jeans. On one hand they are one of the most admired, respected brands in the raw denim space, but on the other they are near-illusive and difficult to obtain given their small handful of stockists outside of Japan.

Regardless of where you stand, it’s tough to argue that the Osaka-based company does not seize to impress with the wares they produce season after season. Case in point: their 25 Oz. 15th Anniversary Denim Jacket (S552XX). Despite being washed once, the S552XX possesses all the core qualities of a denim jacket – sturdy construction, purposeful hardware, clean fit – while still oozing an iconic look reminiscent of the Levi’s Type II Jacket.

Of course we would be remiss not to dig into the fine details of the piece. The jacket is finished with the traditional Samurai silver-gold selvedge, which is meant to represent a traditional samurai sword; and the garment itself utilizes the same Zero Selvedge denim fabric that we saw in the S5000VX 17 Oz. and related commemorative pieces.

Samurai Jeans

For a brand with such a low profile, Samurai Jeans has unexpectedly become one of the most revered companies in the world of raw denim. For over fifteen years, the company has been working to merge quality and rarity into their unique products, based on the unifying idea that, “without a perfect match between the jeans and the maker, the jeans are worthless.”

On the Samurai Jeans‘ website, their concept is explained in more detail:

…in a world dominated by cheap jeans which easily lose color, we focus on ‘quality’ and ‘the beauty and zen of the fading of color’ and seek perfection in our creations, always taking on new challenges.

Samurai Jeans was started in Osaka, Japan by Toru Nogami (Nogami-san) in 1997, at the height of Japan’s raw denim boom.  Samurai was a relative latecomer to the market, with the infamous “Osaka Five” all producing jeans early in the decade. Inspired by the Levi’s 501, Nogami-san named their first jeans the 510 (full name S510XX).

Initially, the company used medium weight fabrics, such as the 15 oz. denim, for their first jeans which only a hundred pairs were produced. But over time, Samurai began to push the limits of what a vintage-inspired company could do, as they introduced heavy fabrics and inventive experimentation, carefully working to develop original fabrics with texture and aging properties that were quite different from vintage jeans.

With their innovative effort to try new things, Samurai established a unique identity for themselves, combining American Casual influences with a distinctly Japanese edge.

Toru Nogami (Nogami-san)

Unlike some brands that have, at least in some sense, sold out for the sake of reaching a wider audience, Samurai has only become more and more obsessive over the years; perhaps culminating in 2013 when the Nogami-san and the Samurai staff produced a run of jeans in which they took part in every stage of production. Starting with the growth of the cotton itself, their actions were completely unprecedented in the history of denim, and a powerful reminder of Samurai‘s near-psychotic commitment to the art of crafting denim.

Even though the company started up in 1997, it would be years before the brand was available in the west. Only a few die-hard, early raw denim fans in the first years of the 21st century knew about Samurai, which they imported from Japan through proxying. But in 2005, the brand finally reached the US market when Gordon Heffner opened the New York-based retailer Blue in Green.

BiG remains as the only official U.S. retailer, although for a very short period in 2006, Self Edge also sold Samurai. Unlike other brands eager to expand outside of Japan, Samurai is slow to seek new retailers, and almost seem wary of their success overseas. A few other foreign retailers include DC4 representing the European market in Germany, Take5 in Asia, and Right Hand Distribution in Australia.

Blue in Green

Blue in Green

Expanding beyond their standard 15 oz straight cut, the brand now offers many models. Though initially inspired by vintage work wear and American brands such as Lee and Levi’s, the company has found considerable success in the overseas market with models such as the S710xx.

Though it attracts little interest in Japan, the 710 is by far the most popular model outside of Japan, showing the considerably divergence in taste between Japanese and Western denim fans. Iron Heart is probably the brand most closely associated with heavyweight denim, but Samurai is nearly as well-known for their heavy fabrics, including ones that go up to 24 Oz., and which are unsanforized; further adding to the extreme nature of the denim.

Samurai‘s denim has also won many fans for its terrific fading properties. Not only do fabrics like the 19 oz. denim fade much more quickly and with higher contrast than most brands’ fabrics, they also have a unique texture that’s immediately identifiable as a Samurai fabric.  Another impressive facet of their denim’s character is the nature in which all the parts of a pair of jeans are designed to age together.

In their own words,

The leather patches, buttons, rivets, slake, flasher, are used to accent and create the perfect performance, to create the epitome of original denim and the best jeans.

Samurai is heralded for their attention to detail. They always create new rivets and engravings on their denim, and a different leather patch for every single model. Most of their models include a unique leather patch with its signature full moon silhouette and lot number, which designates the year that a pair was manufactured. For example, pairs made in 2013 – celebrating the company’s 15th anniversary – are lot #16.

The brand’s first model was the classic straight cut, the S510XX. This jean has been altered and tweaked over the years, but remains the brand’s trademark model. In 2000, they came out with a WWII cut, which would later become the S3000VXThey introduced their now-infamous 19 oz Kiwami denim in 2003, along with the women’s Geisha model.

One of the brand’s most iconic models, the S0500xx, was introduced in 2006, and quickly gained attention for the SuperFuture Samurai contest. In 2007, they began to create even heavier denim, as Samurai released their first 21 oz denim, which was eventually amped up to an even-heavier 24 oz in 2009.

Samurai S5000S 21 Oz. after 5 Months, 1 Soak, 1 Wash

The people at Samurai care a lot about their denim, but they also care even more about the people wearing their jeans. They’re recognized for putting on the first worldwide denim contest back in 2006. It was put on in conjunction with Beatle and they used the S0500XX for competition.

Samurai also put on two other competitions that took place solely in Japan.  Besides competitions, however, the brand also donates pairs of jeans to the Japan Rescue Association. The jeans that are donated come from their package of re-released styles that they bring back every year. The Japan Rescue Association brings aid and performs rescue missions for people affected by earthquakes, and these jeans can be recognized with a “RR” in their name.

While Samurai could be content to coast by on the success of their standard models, the company is constantly introducing new pairs, limited editions, and otherwise taking risks at a rate that outpaces virtually any other Japanese raw denim company. Just as the company’s hidden rivets are branded with the Japanese phrase 諸行無常 - shogyo mujou, which refers to the impermanent essence of material things – they are constantly changing and innovating in interesting and unique ways.

Samurai Jeans continue on towards the future this this in mind: “To create the world’s best denim, never compromising, we keep fighting.”  The modern raw denim market might be filled with copycats, but once small brand is a powerful reminder that it’s possible to create jeans that are both recognizably based on familiar, vintage styles and yet have a distinct character and story that are completely unique to the brand.

Samurai Jeans Indigo Dyed Kunai Wabash Pinstripe Shirt and Hunting Cap

While the average denim head’s focus naturally lies within denim jeans, their interest isn’t limited to this one single garment. Many take a keen interest in other categories, particularly those which are complementary (such as leather boots or wallets) and/or share a common attribute with raw denim. Thus, it should come as no surprise that we frequently dive into and explore other facets of menswear – such as indigo and different uses of the fascinating dye.

From posters and handkerchiefs to shirting and boots, we’ve previously seen indigo beautifully utilized in all sorts of mediums. To continue our ongoing discovery of the staple dye, we look to the freshly released Kunai Wabash Pinstripe Shirt and Hunting Cap from Samurai Jeans. Both sport the deep indigo and white pinstripe color way, and are created with the quality and precision one would expect from the Japanese denim bellwether.

Samurai S634VX-15th Musashi Model Zero Anniversary Denim

If there ever was a brand that loves to do limited edition releases, it’d be Samurai. Whether it’s to celebrate an anniversary or just because they want to, it seems like they are consistently releasing jeans that feature a long list of intricate details. Their latest model, the Samurai S634VX-15TH Musashi Model Zero, is no exception.

It can be challenging to get all their limited edition jeans straight, but the Musashi Model Zero is quite unique in that it is one of the few Samurai jeans to feature suspender buttons and a cinch back. The denim is their signature 17 oz. Zero denim, which is an unsanforized denim known for its slubbiness and red selvedge ID with silver lamé,  and comes in their fuller S634 cut.

Other details include a crotch rivet, Jacquard pocket bags that read “Shogyo Mujo” which roughly translates to “All Things Change”, as well as extras like the 15th anniversary coin pouch and button. This jean definitely gears more towards the denimheads who favor the repro style, but regardless of whether or not this is a jean you’d wear, it’s definitely one that stands out amongst Samurai‘s vast collection.

Fade Friday – Samurai Naniwa Special (2 years, 10 washes, 3 soaks)

It’s not often we feature the same pair of jeans twice on Fade Friday. Most denim is awarded the title posthumously, but some pairs just keep going and going and continue to fade far beyond what we thought was possible. This Samurai Naniwa Special is one such pair. We originally featured these jeans nearly a year ago, and they had already achieved enough of a spectacular fade to warrant a spot in the Top 10 Fades of 2014, and yet they return, with even more glory!

They belong to Superdenim forum stalwart Max Power and still a part of the Heavyweight Denim Championships. We predicted this pair would only get better with more wear, and those dreams have come true. Max’s still shows a balance of contrast, overall fade, and that vintage shade of blue that comes form a decent number of washes.

Keep on trucking Max, we’re waiting for a third appearance!

In the movie Yojimbo, Toshiro Mifune plays an itinerant ronin who manipulates two rival gangs against each other to bring peace to a small town. One of the gangs discovers his plan, though, and beats him so badly that he has to be carried around in a basket for the rest of the movie. And even in that state, the more beat up looking samurai would be the jeans you see above.

Reader Daniel Jackson put his Samurai SO510xx to the test for two years, wearing them while biking, working on art projects, and manual labor all over the world. the 19oz. heavyweight denim could barely keep up to the task, requiring around a dozen repairs from his local Chinese tailor.

The patina, the fades, and the destruction, however, are ultimately things of beauty. Great work, Daniel. Like Yojimbo, may your jeans live on for another two dozen spinoffs.

Samurai SM610DX-P Herringbone Selvedge Denim Work Pant

Crossing into the territory of brands like Carhartt, and Pointer Brand, the Motor Club line under the Samurai label features pieces inspired by garages and gearheads. The latest member of the club is Samurai’s own version of the work pant, the SM610DX-P.

Made of a heavy 17oz. herringbone selvedge denim, it’s the same fabric used in their 310 series. It toes the line between work pants and a 5-pocket style jean with its rounded rear pockets, tool pocket, and yoke panels which you would normally find on your average jean.

Other details include triple-needle stitching at the yoke, and both the inseams and outseams as well as checkered flag print pocket bags. It comes in an easy straight fit and should look great down the line when it’s worn in, greased up and faded.

Available for 24,840 JPY (~$200 USD) at Samurai.

NYC Market Week Spring Summer 16: MAN, Kingpins, and Blue in Green

Prepare your eyeballs for the final installment from this summer’s New York Market Week. We’ve already gone over what we saw at the Capsule and Liberty Fairs shows, not it’s time to finish it off.

In this update we polish off what we saw at MAN, the Kingpins textile tradeshow, and denim retailer Blue in Green’s showroom for their Japanese brands. So saddle up to see what’s new from The Hill-SideViberg, Cone Mills, Samurai Jeans, and more!

Man

The Hill-Side

Look out, world, here comes The Hill-Side! After several years incubating as an accessories brand, the guys behind Hickoree’s continue to grow and grow every season. While previous THS seasons have been a bit formal–button downs and blazers–this upcoming summer is cool nautical casual. Shoes are velcro-ed, shirts are tie-dyed, pins depict ramen, and the dinnerware still matches the shirting.

They’ve also begun to produce their own proprietary fabrics in the United States, so look for this label for THS exclusives.

Viberg

man kingpins big - 060

There are few brands with as a rabid a fanbase as Canadian bootmaker Viberg. The three-generation spanning workboot manufacturer has been in the “fashion boot” business for less than a decade and already their drops are selling out online in minutes, and they even had the cops called on their most recent sample sale in New York because too many people showed up.

Guy and Brett mentioned that they’re trying to up production, which is currently at about 30 pairs per day, but it’s difficult to do so and still maintain the same quality standards. Despite the high demand for what Viberg already does, they’re still experimenting and trying out new lasts, new makeups, new leathers, and even new construction methods.

One of the new materials is a natural kangaroo leather, which remains supple but tough over the life of the boot.

And in new ways to use old materials, Viberg has had a strong following for their shell cordovan boots, but these flesh out shells show off the inside of the leather and all the dye that makes it through the skin.

Nanamica

man kingpins big - 041

Nanamica’s Eiichiro Homma may have the best eye for casual tech fabrics in the world. Coolmax blended selvedge denim–no problem; Gore-Tex fused chambray raincoats–easy; knit seersucker–I don’t understand it but he’s done it; ultra light nylon twill–you’re looking at it. The above bag may look like a navy Filson, but it weighs several pounds lighter.

Kingpins

Kingpins is one of the biggest tradeshows when it comes to commercial denim buying. All those brands that make the denim you know and love rarely produce their own fabric, they come to see mills at shows like this one where they can compare swatches and buy yardage. Here’s some of the best of what we saw on the floor.

Cone Mills

man kingpins big - 077

America’s last bastion of selvedge denim Cone Mills may not do the majority of their business from the White Oak plant, but that production is still immensely important to the mill’s identity. It’s also their 110th anniversary, so they had the front of the show decked out with items from their archival “Found Collection“.

man kingpins big - 067

man kingpins big - 066

man kingpins big - 081

The latest denim off the White Oak Draper looms line is their “natural indigo“, which uses plant indigo dyes grown in the Southeastern United States.

The denim itself is much brighter and lighter than fabrics made with artificial indigo. No word yet on how these will fade naturally, but we’re eager to find out! They’ll be running it in a 13oz. and a 16oz. denim and will be shipping yardage at the end of August, so expect to see these on legs by the end of the year.

man kingpins big - 082

And back from the dead is Cone’s beloved selvedge indigo duck canvas. They had discontinued production three seasons ago, but it has returned with a new sulphur-dyed weft. Apparently many brands were worried about crocking onto their customer’s legs, so these fades will be exclusively on the outside of the canvas and have a more salt-and-pepper appearance due to the plain weave.

man kingpins big - 083

Cone’s VP of marketing and product development Kara Nicholas had an example of the original canvas, faded from years of use on a tote bag.

Blue Selvedge

man kingpins big - 102

Normally the only Italian mill of note for selvedge denim is Candiani, but recently there’s been a new player–Blue Selvedge. The company is a premium off-shoot of larger mill, Berto, and they’ve been cooking up some very interesting wool blends, super neppy denims, and even a new honeycomb weave.

Artistic Fabric Mills

man kingpins big - 091

Our friend Henry Wong at Artistic Fabric Mills has been brewing up a new (old) kind of blue–bleu de travail. Also known as “benzo blue”, bleu de travail was the color favored for early and mid-century European workwear. Indigo was not nearly as prevalent in Europe so they used benzoate to make their blue collar clothing.

This blue fades more slowly and has a residual purple caste, as you can see on the vintage piece below. Henry and his team have reproduced the blue from using vintage examples and old dye manuals to give you another blue option beyond indigo.

Blue in Green

New York retailer Blue in Green has been the exclusive American retailer for quite a few of Japan’s most hardcore denim brands like Samurai, Pure Blue Japan, and Oni since they opened in the mid-2000s. Now they’re looking to expand distribution on many of those brands and invited press and retailers for a look.

Owner and proprietor Gordon Heffner was there to walk us through his brands as well as many of the faded examples he and his staff and customers have worn in over the years. There’s nothing much new on offer that isn’t currently available in the BiG shop, but it was quite impressive to see everything laid out at once, on the rack.

That concludes our coverage of New York’s 2016 Spring/Summer Market Week. That was over 500 photos and 3,000 words. Big thanks to all the brands who gave their time, Gerald Ortiz, for joining me on this lovely adventure, and Advil so I could do all this on a recently broken foot. See you next season!

Fade of the Day – Samurai Jeans 711VX (8 months, 2 washes, 1 soak)

In the world of raw denim there are plenty of high-contrast fades to go around, but sometimes they need to be offset with a pair of nice, overall fades. Reader Ryan Hodges gave us just what we needed when he submitted his pair of Samurai Jeans 711VX.

Ryan’s worn them nearly everyday for eight months and faded them at his job at a wine warehouse in addition to just walking around New York City. His job’s constantly chilled to 56 degree Fahrenheit and has given him a perfect reason to give these jeans plenty of wears. Also note that his fit of the 711VX is not typical: he had the legs tapered at Loren Denim in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

It’s finally Fade Friday and this week we have a pair of Samurai Jeans S710xx‘s that have yet to go under the needle for any repairs even after more than two years of hard wear. Davon Ford of Baltimore picked up these jeans before moving to Montreal and has since worn these slubby Sam’s to reveal an incredible amount of texture and a wide range of indigo shades.

He’s worn them to countless nights at the club, in champagne fights in Las Vegas, and harsh Canadian winters. Ford chooses not to baby them with repairs, as he wants them to age naturally. We’d say they’re aging pretty well, and knowing how Samurai’s wear, they’ve still got a good bit left in the tank.

You can follow him on Instagram.

Sometimes, the fades do all the talking. These Samurai S710xx’s have made it from Bandung, Indonesia for today’s Fade of the Day and clearly uphold the Samurai name. Sandika Akbar simply says that he wore these everyday and that he repaired the knee himself. Nice job with that leather patch! Overall, he’s managed to break in the heavy 19 oz. fabric so that there’s plenty of contrast, and not a lot of indigo – especially at the thighs.

Fade of the Day - Samurai S710xx (1 Year, 2 Washes, 1 Soaks) - Front Top

Liem Hu Sen from Indonesia submitted his pair of Samurai S710xx’s for today’s featured fade, and once again, upholds the Samurai standard. Wearing them only Fridays through Sundays, these jeans have just as much character on them as an everyday pair.

The front has a well-worn lap fade with complements of whiskers going all the way up to the waistband. Of course the honeycombs are stacked and the entire jean is toned with the grain that we all know and love from Samurai. The leather patch has gotten some charter to it topping off the overall look of this jean.

Fade Friday is here, everyone, and hold on to your seats because we have quite the pair of jeans for you. Reader Tharapong Khamvanet of Thailand has graciously sent us photos of this lovely pair of  Samurai Jeans S5000VX 15th Anniversary 25oz. They’ve seen the better part of only a year of wear with one sea wash and have turned out to be a dream for those who love high contrast jeans. Honeycombs don’t get much bigger or more sharply defined than this, folks. The subtle stacking over the monster cuffs isn’t too shabby either, and there’s even a Zippo fade in the coin pocket for good measure. Can these continue going? We certainly hope so.

Samurai-Jeans-15oz-S0552XX-Denim-Jacket-Front

Samurai Jeans has just released the 15oz. S0552XX Denim Jacket. If you didn’t get to grab one of their 15-year anniversary jackets from early 2014, here’s your chance at redemption.

The new take is significantly lighter-weight (the 15-year iteration was constructed from a whopping 25oz. denim), perfect for the warmer weather ahead. It has a single wash under its belt, so to speak, leaving plenty of the legendary Samurai fade to be experienced. Samurai has used its traditional silver-and-gold selvedge, a design detail inspired by samurai swords. Silver buttons feature the usual sunrise imprint, and are included on the back with adjustable tabs on each hip, as well as small pleats for improved fit… and fade.

The functional style, boxy cut, high contrast gold stitching, and even the little red tag peeking out from the chest pocket bring to mind a traditional American work-a-day denim jacket. And it’s constructed from Texas cotton denim to boot (a favored source for the brand).

As of this writing, the S0552XX is already sold out on Samurai’s website but keep an eye out for restocks.

At long last, Samurai is making itself available to those who favor a slim cut to their denim. The brand has made a name for itself with its strong, beautifully fade-friendly denim and exceptional construction, but the Samurai silhouette swings pretty wide.

Their new model, Slim Tapered S0511XX, brings together a comfortable cut at the waist and thigh with a narrow leg below the knee. The emphasis on the slim calf helps wearers of any size maintain a trim profile. The jeans are constructed with 15oz. denim woven from Texas-grown cotton. Other features include a button fly with classic Samurai sunrise buttons, as well as their signature silver-threaded selvedge, contrast stitching in yellow and gold, and leather waistband patch.

If you want to slim down your denim wardrobe, you can stock up over at Samurai for 24000 JPY, or around $217.
